EU clashes over €90 billion for Ukraine: France blocks purchase of American weapons

According to ТСН: The European Union has faced serious disagreements over the use of the €90 billion loan intended for Ukraine. The main issue lies in the possibility of purchasing American weapons with these funds.

According to information, Paris insists that financing should be directed solely towards defense products from European companies. French President Emmanuel Macron believes that even delays in deliveries are justified if they help support the European military-industrial complex.

The French side cites another argument: the political aspect. Macron and his allies point to the unpredictable and sometimes hostile rhetoric of Donald Trump, particularly his recent statements about Greenland, which they believe underscore the need to reduce dependency on the USA.

Germany and the Netherlands categorically disagree with France's position. They justify their viewpoint with pragmatism and the needs of the front. Representatives of these countries note that the European defense sector is currently unable to produce the entire necessary range of weapons to defend Ukraine.

This particularly concerns specific air defense systems, missiles for them, spare parts for F-16 fighters, and other types of missile weapons which are mostly manufactured in the United States. Some countries believe that Ukraine should be given more freedom in using the funds to purchase available and effective weapons.

According to data, more than two-thirds of the funding could be directed towards military needs. Even in the case of a French veto, a decision can be made by a simple majority of EU member states.

It is worth noting that G7 leaders plan to meet with US President Donald Trump at the World Economic Forum in Davos to obtain personal confirmation of security guarantees for Ukraine after a possible ceasefire.

The negotiations will involve Volodymyr Zelensky and the leadership of the European Commission and will concern agreements prepared by the USA and European partners to prevent a resumption of Russian aggression after the hostilities cease.

These disputes within the EU highlight the immense challenges Ukraine faces amid ongoing war. Balancing between European and American interests could become a key factor in ensuring a stable military potential for Ukraine, which is crucial in countering aggression.
