World’s Longest Road Tunnel Opens in India: Travel Time Slashed from 3 Hours to 15 Minutes.
Zojila Tunnel Construction Underway
According to Novyny.live: India has commenced work on what will become the world’s longest road tunnel, linking the Kashmir and Ladakh regions. Once completed, this ambitious project will dramatically cut travel time between the two areas from three hours to just 15 minutes. Named the Zojila Tunnel, it will stretch 13.15 kilometers, surpassing the previous record held by the Dr. Syama Prasad Mukherjee Tunnel, which measures 9.2 kilometers.
The entire project spans 31 kilometers and carries an estimated cost of around 68 billion rupees. Megha Engineering and Infrastructures Limited is handling the construction. The tunnel is expected to open in February 2028.
Regional Impact
Beyond drastically reducing travel time, this massive infrastructure venture will also lessen dependence on weather conditions, which frequently disrupt transportation between these areas. The Zojila Tunnel will serve as a critical link in India’s infrastructure network, enhancing accessibility and connectivity between Kashmir and Ladakh.
This project has the potential to transform the economic and social landscape of both Kashmir and Ladakh by simplifying access to goods, services, and tourist destinations. It is also expected to spur regional infrastructure development, attract investment, and create new job opportunities. Importantly, the tunnel will function not only as a vital transport corridor but also as a symbol of India’s commitment to strengthening connections across its diverse territories.
