Potato prices dropped by 10% in a week: experts named the reasons.
According to ТСН: The demand for potatoes in the Ukrainian market has significantly decreased, which, in turn, led to a drop in prices.
According to analysts from the EastFruit project, this week the activity in the potato segment has substantially declined. Despite producers' hopes for a traditional price increase ahead of the New Year holidays, retail prices started to drop. Wholesale companies are reluctant to increase purchasing volumes due to decreased consumer demand.
Potato Prices
Currently, quality potatoes in the Ukrainian market can be purchased for 6–12 UAH per kilogram (0.14–0.29 dollars), which is on average 10% cheaper than at the beginning of last week.
Factors for Price Reduction
Experts link the price decrease to several reasons: weak demand, stable supplies from local farms, and not the best quality of products, which hinders its sale in the domestic market.
Moreover, analysts note that potatoes in Ukraine currently cost, on average, 61% less than at the end of December last year.
Let us remind you that recently the Cabinet answered whether there will be a tariff increase for water in winter.
The decrease in demand for potatoes may indicate changes in consumer sentiment among the population against the backdrop of economic challenges. The supply disruptions and price reductions may create new opportunities for producers, but at the same time indicate problems in the consumption sector. It is important to monitor market trends going forward to understand how this will impact Ukraine's agricultural sector.
