Ukraine lost 90% of its coal reserves: where energy resources are now extracted.
Ukraine can boast significant coal reserves, which are a key resource for the country's energy and industrial development. The major coal basins include Donetsk, Dnipro, and Lviv-Volyn.
Donetsk coal basin
The Donetsk basin, also known as Donbas, is the largest and most important region of the coal industry in Ukraine. Here, more than 90% of coal resources are concentrated, including high-quality coking coal.
Resourcegroup states that before the war, there were 30 mines in the basin extracting coal, including anthracite and steam coal.
After the onset of the conflict in Donbas in 2014, Ukrainian thermal power plants began to rely on imported coal.
Dnipro coal basin
The Dnipro basin is located in central Ukraine and has significant deposits of brown coal with total reserves of 4.2 billion tons.
Lviv-Volyn coal basin
This basin, located in the western regions of Ukraine, has total coal reserves of over 1.5 billion tons. Coal from the Lviv-Volyn basin is used in energy, industry, and households.
