Venezuela Releases 30 Political Prisoners, Including Opposition Figure Guanipa.
Venezuela Frees Political Detainees
According to TSN.ua: On February 8, 2026, the Venezuelan government released 30 individuals it had held as political prisoners. This action is part of a broader amnesty initiative that has seen a total of 383 people freed since January 8, 2026. The releases come amid a long-running political and humanitarian crisis in the country. Among those freed were:
- Opposition figure Juan Pablo Guanipa, detained in May 2025;
- Lawyer Perkins Rocha, who was arrested in August 2024;
- Rafael Tudares, who had spent over a year in prison.
These releases coincide with the National Assembly's preliminary approval of an amnesty bill this week. The Venezuelan government's stance on political detainees has been a persistent point of contention, drawing scrutiny from international human rights organizations. It is known that charges against some of these prisoners included terrorism and leading a terrorist conspiracy.
María Corina Machado, a prominent opposition leader, welcomed the latest releases and called on Venezuelan authorities to free all political prisoners.
Domestic Political Climate
This development reflects the complex and tense political climate in Venezuela, where struggles over civil rights and freedoms continue.
The freeing of these prisoners may signal a potential shift in the government's approach, possibly influenced by sustained international pressure. Such moves could represent a significant step in fostering dialogue between the government and opposition, potentially aiding in resolving the nation's protracted political crisis. Faced with ongoing domestic protests and criticism, these releases may also be an attempt by the government to improve its international standing and reduce internal tensions.
