Ukrainian Veteran Takes the Stage at Dance Tournament to Aid Wounded Children.
Veteran's Dance Floor Debut
According to UATV: Valentyn Alekseyenko, a 29-year-old soldier from the 3rd Separate Tank Brigade, performed at a national dance tournament in Lviv. The event was part of a charity initiative supporting Unbroken Kids, a foundation dedicated to rehabilitating children injured in the war. While serving on the front lines, Valentyn sustained a severe spinal cord injury, resulting in a loss of sensation in over 70% of his body. His participation highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Ukrainian veterans and civilians alike.
The dance competition, known as the Ukr Dance Cup, was founded in Kharkiv in 2014 but was suspended for three years following the full-scale invasion. It was revived in Lviv last year, marking a significant effort to support both veterans and children in need through cultural events.
'I had long wanted to try wheelchair dancing. Then this opportunity came up—a charity event to raise funds for Unbroken Kids. They asked me to participate, and I gladly agreed. This is my first experience of this kind. I'm the sort of person who loves trying new things and hates sitting still.' — Valentyn Alekseyenko
Valentyn also emphasized that the training marked a new phase in his rehabilitation. 'I really enjoyed the training sessions. I discovered a new stage of rehabilitation for myself. When you train, practice movements, and dance—your body moves, and I feel much better,' the veteran noted.
Stanislav Kuprichenko, the tournament organizer, stated that each competition includes a charitable component:
- Last year, funds were raised for prosthetic limbs for wounded soldiers.
- This year, the charity focus is the Unbroken Kids foundation, which rehabilitates children affected by the war.
He added that last year's event successfully raised approximately 100,000 hryvnias.
Thus, Valentyn Alekseyenko's involvement in the dance tournament not only aids his personal recovery but also helps gather crucial funds for children suffering from the consequences of the war.
The Significance of Community Support
This event showcases the resilience of veterans while underscoring the vital need to support children traumatized by conflict. The revival of the dance tournament amidst war serves as a powerful symbol of hope and societal solidarity during profoundly difficult times. Supporting charitable initiatives like Unbroken Kids is a critical step toward helping victims rebuild their lives and forging a better future for new generations.
