Understanding Military Pay Issues During Transfers

According to Novyny.live: As Ukraine's full-scale war continues, service members moving between branches face complex questions about pay and compensation. Under current wartime regulations, all Ukrainian military structures are unified under a single command known as the Defense Forces of Ukraine. This means that personnel transferring from the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine (SBGSU) to the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) are entitled to receive any payments that were not properly accrued or disbursed during their time with the SBGSU.

However, it is important to note that the new AFU unit is not obligated to compensate for unused vacation days that accumulated while serving in the SBGSU. To recover these funds, service members must submit a written request to the SBGSU specifically asking for a calculation of any outstanding amounts.

Yuriy Ayvazyan, an expert in this field, explains: 'If a service member was formally discharged or removed from the rolls of the SBGSU and then enrolled in the AFU, all debts from the period of service in the SBGSU must be settled by the relevant SBGSU authority or unit.'

This means that AFU military units are not automatically responsible for paying old debts incurred under the SBGSU. Transfers between units within the Defense Forces of Ukraine require careful handling to avoid misunderstandings over payments. It is essential that service members understand their rights and responsibilities, as well as the process for claiming unpaid sums, in order to protect their financial interests.

Why This Payment Issue Matters Now

With ongoing combat operations in Ukraine and frequent transfers of personnel between different military structures, the issue of payments and compensation has become especially pressing. Properly informing service members about their rights and the necessary procedures can help prevent financial hardship and ensure their material well-being during wartime. Given the complexity of the situation, it is critical that relevant authorities coordinate their actions clearly and ensure timely compensation, which in turn will strengthen trust in military institutions.
