'Gen Z' Protest Waves Sweep the Globe

According to The Sun: In scenes reminiscent of a dystopian blockbuster, protesters from 'Gen Z' have left trails of deep discontent across various corners of the world – from Asia to Africa, calling for the resignation of leaders and causing riots.

Now, concerns are arising that this discontent may also spread to the UK, where youth mobilization, influenced by social media, is occurring rapidly.

Violence in Nepal

Last month, deadly riots erupted in Nepal after 'Gen Z' protesters took to the streets over a ban on social media. More than 70 people died during the clashes. Riotous crowds stormed parliament, setting the Prime Minister's residence and government offices on fire.

“The anger has been brewing for a long time,” noted Dr. Fraser Sugdens, a geography professor at the University of Birmingham.

Following that, the violence spread to other countries. In Morocco, youth movements under the slogan GenZ 212 flared up after a tragedy in a hospital where several women died due to underfunding of medical facilities.

Pressure on Youth

Demands for reforms in the healthcare and education systems in Morocco led to riots. In Madagascar, power outages and water shortages sparked mass protests. Peru witnessed mass riots due to a new law concerning pensions for citizens over 18.

“This is not just a wave that will disappear; it's a new language of youth claiming that their future should be shaped by them, not for them,” emphasized Sergio Pantonia Tortes, a former college advisor.

Discontent in the UK

The UK, while having an older demographic, may also see a surge in youth discontent. Experts are warning of accumulated dissatisfaction.

“I think there are similar issues in the Western world,” says Dr. Sugdens.

Currently, British youth are expressing their dissatisfaction through elections and protests. However, considering events in Nepal, Madagascar, Morocco, and Peru, social media platforms like TikTok may quickly turn discontent into active action on the streets.

Reuters In light of these events, it can be noted that youth discontent is rising, reflecting deeper socio-economic issues. The support for these protests on social media demonstrates that the new generation is ready to fight for their rights and a voice in global affairs.
