Reduction of payments for Universal Credit recipients
More than half a million households receiving Universal Credit have experienced reductions or suspensions of payments over the past 17 months. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) reported that 622,000 individuals received sanctions from February 2024 to July 2025. This means that their payments were either suspended or reduced.“More than 561,630 recipients received penalties for failing to properly attend mandatory interviews…”The increase in the number of sanctions has raised concerns among community organizations, which believe that such actions may worsen families' financial situations. According to experts, these changes not only complicate the lives of Universal Credit recipients but also threaten their financial stability. In the context of rising prices and economic instability, it is important to find ways to support vulnerable populations. Specialists believe that approaches to sanctions should be reconsidered, taking into account the real needs of families facing financial difficulties.
