Wayne Rooney revealed how he almost joined Chelsea in 2004.
Imagine what happened
According to The Sun: Wayne Rooney revealed that in 2004 he almost became a Chelsea player after learning of their plans to send him out on loan.
Rooney had two successful seasons at Everton before becoming a regular for the England national team.

“When we were at Euro 2004, Everton had agreed with Chelsea for my signing, and I knew nothing about it,” Rooney noted.

Moreover, Roman Abramovich's team initially planned to send Rooney on loan to Middlesbrough, but he did not like that at all.
When he learned that Manchester United were interested in him, it was the only club he wanted to sign with.
Rooney signed a contract with United on the 2004 deadline day for 27 million pounds, becoming a club legend. He recalls watching 'Coronation Street' with his partner Coleen when Paul Scholes called him.
In that phone call, Scholes asked if Rooney intended to sign with United.
Rooney said: “I was at home, watching Coronation Street, and suddenly the phone rings. It was Paul Scholes: 'Vaza, it’s Scholesy... are you signing with us or what?' I just sat there thinking: What is happening?”
United tried to sign him in 2005, but under pressure from Newcastle swiftly activated the deal, signing Rooney on the same day.
Challenging moments in career
Rooney sought to leave United twice – in 2010 and 2013, when Jose Mourinho wanted to bring him to Chelsea again.
“I think they offered Chelsea 44 million pounds for me, but Chelsea wasn't willing to pay that amount,” he said.
Rooney stayed at United until 2017, returning to Everton for one year, and in 2018 moved to DC United, where he ended his career in 2021.
Since then, he has been involved in coaching, working with Derby, DC United, Birmingham, and eventually Plymouth, from which he was sacked in December.
Wayne Rooney has yet to return to management, but has become a regular analyst on the 'Match of the Day' show.
