Kobbi Mainu wanted to leave Manchester United: why Ratcliffe blocked the move

According to The Sun: Sir Jim Ratcliffe personally intervened to prevent Kobbi Mainu from leaving Manchester United this summer.

The 20-year-old Main expressed dissatisfaction over the lack of playing time under Ruben Amorim, as he was not in the starting lineup for the first two matches of the Premier League season.

The player, trusted by many fans, approached the club with a request for a loan in the final days of the transfer window.

Main wanted to stay at the club but was also looking for opportunities to play regularly to enhance his chances of participating in the 2026 World Cup.

However, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano, the club's management, including Ratcliffe, unanimously decided to prohibit any transfers for the young talent.

“Kobbi requested to go on loan; he never asked to leave the club permanently. There was never an opportunity either for Manchester United or for Kobbi Mainu. But he really wanted to go on loan. For Kobbi, this was a priority. Man United refused; this decision was made collectively with all participants: directors, CEO, coach, and owner. 'We cannot let Kobbi Mainu go,' was the position.”

Romano also reported that if the situation with playing time does not change, Main may try to leave the club again in January. “Now we are facing interesting months. If Kobbi plays, the situation will be normal; if he stays on the bench, this could become a relevant topic again in January,” he added.

Injuries to Matheus Cunha and Mason Mount, who were substituted in the match against Burnley, may open up opportunities for Main to be included in the starting lineup.

The start of United's success

The manager of the “Red Devils”, Amorim, noted that Main is competing for a spot with the club's captain Bruno Fernandes.

Also, after the announcement of the squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Serbia, Thomas Tuchel stated that Main was not included on the list due to a lack of playing time.

“He is on our list of players. But currently, in his position 6/8/10 in central midfield, we have players who are in full rhythm and play key roles in their clubs, and that is the next step for him.”

Manchester United face tough challenges against Manchester City, Chelsea, and Brentford after the national team break.

Despite this, Main has received support from fans after posting a video showcasing his skills during training with personal coach Jonas Dodoo.
