Wetherspoons bans Scottish banknotes in England: What is the reason for the decision.
Wetherspoons refuses to accept Scottish banknotes
According to The Sun: The pub chain JD Wetherspoons has banned the acceptance of £20 banknotes in its establishments in England, causing outrage among visitors.
Management informed staff not to accept £20 and £50 Scottish banknotes, resulting in some customers experiencing inconvenience at service.
Scottish £20 banknotes are no longer accepted in Wetherspoons pubsThe reason for this decision was a warning from the Bank of England regarding the circulation of counterfeit Scottish banknotes used by criminal organizations.
The ban does not apply to Scotland and cities with 'close ties' to it, the company added.
Visitor experiences
A pensioner learned of the new policy after being denied service at two of the chain's pubs in Newcastle.
Craig Neil, 72, from Troon, Ayrshire, recounted that he was not served at the 'Mile Castle' pub, and a few hours later faced the same issue at 'Keel Row'.
“They do not accept them in any Wetherspoons in England. There were no explanations,” he said.
“They poured me a pint of Carling, and I gave £20. They said they do not accept Scottish money,” he added.
Wetherspoons' response
A representative from Wetherspoons apologized for the negative impact of the policy on customers.
“We were informed by the Bank of England last October that many counterfeit Scottish £20 banknotes were being circulated by organized criminal gangs,” they said.
They also confirmed that they would further review their decision. Additionally, Wetherspoons announced last month the return of a popular dish to the menu – tuna on baked potatoes, after a regular customer wrote a letter to the chain's founder.

This situation has sparked numerous discussions among visitors and financial experts. Many people note that Wetherspoons' decision could significantly affect customer loyalty and their willingness to visit the chain's establishments. The company needs to find a balance between safety and service for its guests.
Furthermore, this issue highlights the importance of trust in banknotes and financial institutions, which is a crucial aspect of the country's financial system. It remains to be seen how society will react and possibly change Wetherspoons' policy in the future.
