Discounts from Wetherspoons on food and drinks

According to The Sun: The Wetherspoons pub chain is reducing prices on all food and drinks to £1.66 this month.

The popular chain offers customers a 7.5% discount in honor of Tax Equality Day.

Wetherspoons chairman, Sir Tim Martin, has been campaigning for lower VAT for pubs for many years

Guests will be able to enjoy their favorite drinks and dishes at reduced prices for just one day – Thursday, September 18.

This means that instead of £10 for food and drinks, customers will pay only £9.25.

A half-liter of Ruddles Best beer, one of the cheapest in the chain, will cost just £1.66, giving a discount of 13 pence.

Those planning to have breakfast will pay £6.87 instead of the usual £7.43.

For fans of Kopparberg beer, the new price will be £2.58 instead of £2.79.

But remember, prices in Wetherspoons pubs may vary across the UK, so you may not always receive the same discount.

This promotion applies to pubs in Northern Ireland, Wales, and England. In Scotland, the discount only applies to food and non-alcoholic beverages.

The discount will be automatically deducted from your bill when ordering at the counter or in the app.

To find the nearest pub, you can use the search tool on the Wetherspoons website or app.

Call for VAT reduction

Discount Day aims to raise awareness of the benefits of a permanent VAT reduction in the hospitality industry.

All food and drinks in UK pubs are subject to 20% VAT. In contrast, supermarkets do not pay tax on food, allowing them to offer lower prices.

Wetherspoons founder Sir Tim Martin has been advocating for a solution to this issue for years and is calling for a reduction in VAT to 12.5%.

“The biggest threat to the hospitality industry is the huge tax differential between pubs, restaurants, and supermarkets,” he said ahead of Tax Equality Day.
“Pubs have been under immense pressure for decades due to tax disadvantages compared to supermarkets.”
“It doesn’t make sense for the hospitality industry to subsidize supermarkets. We need to reduce VAT to 12.5% so that pubs, bars, and restaurants can not only survive but thrive, invest, and create new jobs.”
“Customers who visit Wetherspoons pubs on September 18 will see that the prices of their food and drinks are lower than usual.”
“We call on the Chancellor to create a tax equality between the hospitality industry and supermarkets.”

Pubs have also felt the negative impact of rising national insurance contributions for employers and the minimum wage. It is expected that Labour will increase business tax rates in the upcoming budget, further affecting establishments like Wetherspoons.

Thus, Wetherspoons' promotion not only draws attention to the issue of tax inequality in the industry but also opens the opportunity for pub culture enthusiasts to enjoy delicious dishes and drinks at lower prices. The discount on breakfasts and drinks emphasizes the importance of supporting hospitality establishments that continue to compete in a challenging economic environment.
