Emiliano Martinez's move to Manchester United fell through due to Jadon Sancho
According to The Sun: The transfer of Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez to Manchester United did not happen due to the situation with Jadon Sancho, sources report.
GETTYMartinez had already agreed on personal terms with the 'Red Devils' over the weekend, but issues arose before the transfer window closed. Manchester United decided to sign goalkeeper Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp.
According to information from Fabrizio Romano, Sancho's refusal to move to Villa as part of a swap deal hindered Martinez's transfer.
“Manchester United's idea was to make a permanent swap deal with Jadon Sancho and Emiliano Martinez,” he told GiveMeSport.
He also added that “the team did not plan to involve money, as both players were valued around £25 million.”
However, since “Sancho does not agree to a permanent transfer, other options for Martinez have emerged.”
Manchester United and Aston Villa finalized a deal regarding Sancho only late on Monday night, and 'Villa' officially announced it later.
According to SunSport, Aston Villa will pay 80% of Sancho's hefty salary, which is £250,000 a week.
The amount the club will pay could increase depending on Sancho's success at 'Villa Park'.
It should be noted that Sancho, who spent last season on loan at Chelsea, has not appeared for Manchester United since the Super Cup match against Manchester City in 2024.
