Van Gerwen needs to train more: former player explained the reasons for the decline.
Lack of practice prevents Van Gerwen from remaining in the elite
According to The Sun: Michael van Gerwen has been advised to train more to maintain his status as one of the best darts players.
This year has been difficult for the Dutch athlete, as new stars in the sport emerged, such as Luke Littler and Luke Humphries.
GettyMichael van Gerwen received advice to practice moreVan Gerwen's last victory took place at the German Darts Masters in April, while last week he lost to world number 45 Madars Razma in the final of Players Championship 24.
The former player Vincent van der Voort noted that Van Gerwen's talent is unquestionable, but he needs to train more to improve his game and stay on top. He expressed his opinion on the Darts Draait Door podcast:
“He has really dropped well below his potential. Scoring only 90 points, although on the Pro Tour he averages 122 in a match. This contrast – sometimes very high results, but too often mediocrity, – is concerning.”
“There is no athlete who becomes the best in the world without training. If he wants to stay in the elite, he needs to work seriously.”
The podcast guest Damien Vlotters supported his opinion, emphasizing that Van Gerwen's technique requires consistency in training. He added:
“His throw is not smooth. It has been a really tough process. And until he starts training structurally, I don't see how he can return to his former level.”
“High-level sport requires focus and discipline, even in difficult times.”id='6376846480112' data-video-id='6376846480112' data-account='5067014667001' data-player='default' data-usage='cms:WordPress:6.5.6:2.8.6:javascript' data-embed='default' class='video-js' data-application-id='' controls style='width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute; top: 0; bottom: 0; right: 0; left: 0;'>
Thus, Van Gerwen is in a situation where he needs to rebuild his game and return to his former shape. The competition in darts is only increasing, and in order to become a leader again, he must find ways to improve his skills. Whether he can restore his status among the best depends on his determination and work on himself in the coming months.
