WC-2026: Egypt – Iran match may be rescheduled due to complaints about the Pride event.
Issues with the match between Egypt and Iran
According to The Sun: FIFA representatives may face the necessity of rescheduling the group stage of the World Cup, where Egypt and Iran are set to meet. This is due to complaints from both countries regarding events related to the LGBT community.
According to the decision of the local organizing committee in Seattle, before the draw for the 2026 World Cup, the match at Lumen Field, scheduled for June, will be dedicated to a Pride event.
"We believe that holding such an event during the match may lead to serious conflicts"– stated representatives of Egypt and Iran.
Currently, FIFA officials are actively looking for possible solutions to this situation to avoid worsening diplomatic relations between the countries and to prevent further escalation of tension. This situation highlights the complexity of combining sports and social issues in an international context, especially when it comes to events that provoke different reactions in countries with varying cultural and political norms.
