Scandal in World Cup Qualifiers: Indonesia Left Without Three Players After Defeat.
Chaos in the World Cup Qualifiers
According to The Sun: The qualifying match for the World Cup between Iraq and Indonesia turned into chaos. Three players were sent off, and the referee faced aggression.
A goal in the match was scored by former Manchester United player Zidane Iqbal, who brought Iraq a 1:0 victory.
ReutersThis was only the first part of the chaos at King Abdallah Stadium in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Indonesian players were dissatisfied with referee Ma Ning's decisions. He controlled the game in the first half, but as the second half began, their chances of reaching the World Cup became increasingly unrealistic.
Under the guidance of former Barcelona star Patrick Kluivert, the game began to escalate 23 minutes before the final whistle.
Initially, Iraq's defender Zaid Tahsin received only a yellow card for a foul on Ole Romani.
Iqbal scored 14 minutes before the end of the match, establishing Iraq's advantage, and the tension on the field increased.
Indonesian central defender Kevin Dicks felt he could have received a penalty for a potential foul against Tahsin, but during stoppage time, the referee stopped the attack, blowing the whistle for a foul, resulting in Tahsin receiving a second yellow card.
After the final whistle, Indonesian players surrounded Ning, protesting against his decisions, resulting in two more red cards.
Indonesian left-back Shane Patin'jama was sent off for a brawl with Iraq's head coach Graham Arnold.
When Ning showed the red card, he was shoved from behind, and as a result, he also sent off Indonesia's team manager Suwardji.
Thus, Indonesia ended up at the bottom of Group B in the AFC World Cup Qualifiers after defeats to Saudi Arabia and Iraq.
Iraq will play against Saudi Arabia next Tuesday, trying to secure a place in the World Cup. Any result other than a victory will allow Saudi Arabia to qualify for the tournament, which will take place in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
The team that finishes second will advance to the next round of preliminary qualifying.
Japan, South Korea, Australia, Iran, Uzbekistan, and Jordan have already qualified for the tournament.
This match was a vivid example of the tension and emotions surrounding competitions at this level. The situation became even more controversial due to the referee's decisions, highlighting the importance of fair officiating in sporting events, especially on the international stage. Attention will need to be paid to future matches and their impact on teams' qualifications for the world tournament.
