Trump proposes a weapons-for-natural-resources exchange with Ukraine
U.S. President Donald Trump stated that the United States could supply weapons to Ukraine in exchange for access to its natural resources.
According to The Wall Street Journal, a significant amount of valuable deposits of rare earth metals and other strategic resources are located in territories occupied by Russia or near the front line.
'Access to valuable Ukrainian natural resources will depend, at least in part, on the battle for eastern Ukraine, where Russian troops are currently advancing slowly but steadily,' the article notes.
Experts have doubts about the effectiveness of such an approach. Analyst Wolf-Christian Paes of the International Institute for Strategic Studies sees a low probability of developing deposits without sustainable peace.
Additionally, Benchmark Minerals Intelligence analyst George Ingal noted that extracting rare earth metals is expensive, and Ukrainian deposits are significantly lower in volume than those in the United States.
Remember, Trump has already announced the date of the ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia.
