New border system in the EU
Starting from October 12, 2025, an innovative border system will be implemented in the countries of the European Union, which will significantly change the process of crossing borders for Ukrainian citizens. The Department of Consular Service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine announced the launch of a new Entry/Exit System (EES), which is an automated database for recording all crossings of the external borders of the EU by citizens of third countries, including Ukrainians.Features of the innovation
This system will be applied for short-term visits of up to 90 days within 180 days. It involves the centralized storage of biometric data of travelers: facial photographs, fingerprints, data from foreign passports, as well as the exact time and place of entry or exit from the EU.A fundamentally important aspect will be the mandatory biometric procedure. All passengers without exception must leave their vehicles to undergo biometric scanning. On railway routes, the procedure may vary depending on the specifics of a particular checkpoint.A categorical refusal to provide biometric data will lead to a denial of entry to the Schengen Area countries. As representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs note, the new system aims to significantly strengthen control over compliance with the rules for the stay of foreigners, effectively prevent the use of forged documents, and enhance the overall level of security in the Schengen Area countries. After October 12, 2025, Ukrainians will be able to use this new border system in the EU, which requires mandatory biometric procedures for short-term trips. This innovation will be an important step towards enhancing security and reducing the risk of using forged documents. The new border system in the EU, which will be implemented in 2025, promises to significantly simplify border crossing control, but requires travelers to adhere to new rules. It is important for Ukrainian citizens to be prepared for the changes and to pay close attention to the requirements of biometric procedures to avoid unforeseen difficulties during their travels.
