Electric car benefits will be canceled from 2026: what will happen to prices.
According to inkorr.com: From the beginning of the new year, Ukrainians planning to purchase an electric vehicle will no longer be able to take advantage of tax benefits. Experts predict that this will lead to a sharp increase in electric car imports in October and November as buyers attempt to take advantage of favorable conditions.
Currently, no VAT or customs duty is charged during the importation of electric vehicles. Additional costs are limited to a small excise tax - 1 euro per kWh of battery capacity, which rarely exceeds 100 euros in total.
After the benefits are canceled, a significant price increase for electric vehicles is expected, with costs potentially rising by 30%. In the most optimistic scenario, the increase will be at least 20% due to possible additional discounts from manufacturers for the Ukrainian market.
'The task is to bring in the maximum number of electric vehicles for the needs of our market in October-November, so that there is time for implementation,' explained Oleg Nazarenko, the general director of the Ukrainian Association of Automotive Importers and Dealers.
The experience of Romania, where tax benefits for electric vehicles were also canceled, indicates that electric car sales declined by 30%. In Ukraine, however, the popularity of electric vehicles is rising, with more than half of used cars imported from abroad being in this format.
Tax benefits for electric cars in Ukraine will cease to be effective from January 1, 2026. This may lead to a sharp increase in the cost of electric vehicles, but it may also positively impact the car market in the country. Experts believe that after this, electric car imports will significantly decrease, but the popularity of such vehicles in Ukraine will remain high.
The cancellation of tax benefits for electric vehicles may have a significant impact on the market, complicating access to new cars for Ukrainians. At the same time, this step may encourage manufacturers to adapt their offerings to remain competitive in the Ukrainian market, which continues to show growing interest in eco-friendly vehicles.
