Slovakia Against the Ban on Russian Nuclear Fuel: A Threat to Europe.
According to inkorr.com: Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico noted that the EU's ban on Russian nuclear fuel could pose a significant threat to energy security in Europe. He expressed his opposition to the European Commission's initiative to stop imports of Russian energy in response to the events in Ukraine and the energy crisis that arose in 2022. Fico emphasized that Slovakia does not support such decisions, considering them 'absurd ideological steps.'
'When it comes to gas and oil, we are just shooting ourselves in the foot,' said the Slovak Prime Minister.
In September, Slovakia signed an agreement with the USA concerning nuclear energy, under which plans are made to build a new 1000-megawatt reactor. Fico's position does not align with the European Commission's view, which believes that breaking energy ties with Russia will positively affect Europe’s security in the future.
The agreement between Slovakia and the USA in the field of nuclear energy and Prime Minister Robert Fico's reaction to the European Commission's proposals may lead to a rift in the relations between EU countries and Russian companies. This will also affect the energy security of the region. The refusal of Russian nuclear fuel may have serious consequences for countries that depend on Russia for the supply of this type of energy resources. However, the agreement between Slovakia and the USA may strengthen energy security in the region and create alternative sources of energy supply for European countries.
