Changes in the education sector: salary increases for teachers
In the draft state budget for 2026, there are innovations that foresee a significant salary increase for educators. The main goal is to ensure that teachers' salaries are no less than three minimum wages. As noted by the head of the educational committee of the Verkhovna Rada, Serhiy Babak, a young teacher today receives about 8.2 thousand hryvnias, but after the introduction of the innovations, this amount may rise to 19 thousand hryvnias. Deputies Serhiy Babak, Danylo Hetmantsev, and Serhiy Koleboshin expressed a positive attitude towards such an increase, emphasizing that the current system of allowances does not address the main problem — the excessively low base salary. Therefore, the changes will be aimed at revising the salary structure for educators.According to inkorr.com: The initiative complies with legislative norms, in particular, Article 61 of the Law of Ukraine 'On Education', which speaks about the minimum salary for pedagogical workers. There have also been similar initiatives in the past, such as government resolution No. 822 of Groysman's government, which provided for a gradual increase in salary to four living wages by 2023, but it was not implemented due to changes in governments. It is noted that Ukrainian schools have abandoned outdated traditions.
According to experts, the implementation of these changes is crucial for improving working conditions for teachers and attracting new personnel to the education sector. We hope that the proposed innovations will contribute to enhancing the prestige of the teaching profession in Ukraine, as well as elevating the education system to a new level.Read also
