Stopover in the United Kingdom
Before heading to Madrid, Zelenskyy traveled to London on March 17, 2023, where he met with King Charles III. During his UK visit, the Ukrainian president also held discussions with Prime Minister Keir Starmer and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. These engagements highlight Ukraine’s intensified diplomatic push to bolster defense ties with European nations.
Zelenskyy’s back-to-back visits to Spain and the United Kingdom underscore the strategic significance of international backing for Ukraine amid its ongoing armed conflict. Signing defense agreements with European partners could substantially enhance Ukraine’s military capabilities and strengthen its standing on the global stage. Such diplomatic efforts are crucial for building a coalition of support among European allies, especially given the current security challenges in the region.
