Zelensky in Cyprus: Key Negotiations with EU and Cyprus Leaders

According to ТСН: Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, arrived on a working visit to Cyprus. The Office of the President reported that several important meetings are scheduled as part of the visit. The first adventure will be negotiations with the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides.

The agenda of the visit also includes a meeting with Archbishop Georgios, who is the spiritual leader of Cyprus.

A special event will be a joint meeting of the leaders of Ukraine and Cyprus with the leadership of the European Union, which will include the President of the European Council, António Costa, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.

The main event of the visit will be Volodymyr Zelensky's participation in a solemn ceremony. In the evening, the President will take part in the official opening of the Republic of Cyprus's presidency in the Council of the European Union.

What Preceded

Earlier, on January 1, President Zelensky had a conversation with Nikos Christodoulides about the start of Cyprus's presidency in the EU Council. After this conversation, the President of Cyprus announced that Zelensky would attend the opening ceremony, which will take place in Nicosia on January 7, 2026.

What is Known about the Deployment of Western Forces

As a reminder, Ukraine, France, and the United Kingdom signed a declaration that creates a legal basis for the deployment of Western troops in Ukraine. This opens opportunities for international forces, which will be deployed after the ceasefire, to ensure “calming measures in the air, at sea, and on land” for Ukraine and “the restoration of the Armed Forces of Ukraine” with the involvement of European military.

The USA will also participate in these forces, providing intelligence and logistical capabilities, and committing to support the forces in case of an attack from Russia.

President Zelensky, together with the leaders of France and the United Kingdom, announced their intentions regarding the deployment of multinational forces in Ukraine after the war ends on January 6 in Paris.

This visit of Zelensky to Cyprus underscores the importance of international support for Ukraine during difficult times. Cooperation with Cyprus, as well as discussions on security issues with European partners, are important steps towards stability in the region. Given the events in Ukraine, such meetings take on special significance, as they strengthen the international coalition in support of Ukraine.
