The Ukrainian women's team in épée fencing has won historic silver at the World Cup.
The Ukrainian women's épée team today, November 24, won silver at the World Cup stage in Tunisia.
The team, consisting of Alina Polozyuk, Daria Mironyuk, Olga Sopyt, and Kateryna Budenko, was seeded ninth. Initially, they faced Hungary, who was the eighth seed, and if they won, they would meet the world fencing leaders from Italy.
The Ukrainian fencers defeated both teams: Hungary with a score of 45:38 and Italy with a score of 45:43, creating a sensation at the competition.
For the right to reach the finals, Ukraine competed against France, one of the main favorites. Despite red cards and penalty hits, Ukrainian fencers managed to turn the match from a 'minus 8' situation and won with a score of 41:39. This allowed them to fight for gold for the first Time in the history of our country at the World Cup stage.
In the finals, the Ukrainian fencers competed against the bronze medalists of the 2024 Olympics from Japan. They lost with a score of 22:24.
Thus, Alina Polozyuk, Daria Mironyuk, Olga Sopyt, and Kateryna Budenko won the silver medal at the World Cup, marking the best achievement for Ukrainian women's épée fencing.
It is worth noting that Ukrainian boxer Bovar Khanakov won his first match after returning to sports.
He defeated American Ruben Varr by unanimous decision with scores of 50-45 and 49-46.
It is important to note that Varr was considered the favorite in the match.
The fight took place in Los Angeles (USA), and the boxer wore shorts with 'Mariupol' and 'Ukraine' written on them.
Bovar announced the end of his career after losing to James Brown on February 16.
We also remind you that Ukrainian boxer Oleksandr Zakhodzhiy lost his first fight in his career and could not defend his EBU heavyweight champion title.
The competition took place in Heidelberg, Germany, and Zakhodzhiy's opponent was Labinot Xhodzaj from Kosovo.
In the second round, Zakhodzhiy managed to send his opponent into a heavy knockdown, but Xhodzaj managed to recover.
In the 9th round, Zakhodzhiy lost his advantage, and in the 12th round, he was knocked down.
It should be noted that Zakhodzhiy lost his champion title. This is his first loss in 19 wins, 15 of which were by knockout.
Xhodzaj became Zakhodzhiy's opponent just five days before the fight, as the Swiss representative Arnold Jergej sustained an injury.
Zakhodzhiy made his professional boxing debut in 2017. The EBU title is the most prestigious achievement he has gained so far.

He won against Czech Pavel Seura by knockout in Germany. This was his 16th match in professional boxing, and 12 of them ended in knockout.
