$5,000 Reward Offered for Missing Giraffe That Escaped a Texas Ranch.
Gracie the Giraffe Makes a Run for It
According to Vox - Загальний: In mid-June, a giraffe named Gracie escaped from Cedar Hollow Ranch in Leakey, Texas—about 100 miles west of San Antonio. Authorities have launched an intensive search using helicopters and drones, and a $5,000 reward has been posted for her safe return.
Gracie is a reticulated giraffe, an endangered species native to Africa. Cedar Hollow Ranch specializes in breeding giraffes and other exotic wildlife. Texas is home to roughly 5,000 ranches that keep exotic animals, along with around 500 that allow hunting of such species. The market value of a giraffe can exceed several hundred thousand dollars.
Exotic Animals in Texas: A Billion-Dollar Industry
Across the state, there are more than 2 million exotic animals, collectively valued at $1.5 billion annually. In 2018, Cedar Hollow owner Vic Jones stated:
“They have the right to own these animals. And once they become their animals, they have the right to everything.”
The search for Gracie continues, with the community hoping for her swift and safe return.
This incident highlights the challenges of keeping rare species in private hands and underscores the importance of wildlife conservation. Gracie's escape has drawn widespread attention to issues like illegal hunting and the ethical responsibilities of exotic animal ownership. The use of modern technology—such as drones and helicopters—in the search also demonstrates how innovation can aid in tracking and protecting vulnerable animals.
