How Irpin, Hostomel, and Bucha Were Freed from Occupation

According to UATV: On March 31, 2022, Ukrainian forces successfully retook the towns of Irpin, Hostomel, and Bucha in Kyiv Oblast, ending a brutal period of Russian occupation. While this marked a critical turning point in Ukraine's fight to reclaim its sovereignty, the withdrawal of Russian troops exposed a horrifying trail of war crimes. Investigators and prosecutors have since documented extensive destruction and systematic violence against civilians, revealing the true extent of the suffering inflicted on the region.

Devastation and Crimes by the Numbers

Across Kyiv Oblast, authorities discovered 1,590 bodies of the deceased. In Bucha alone, 422 civilian corpses were found, while the broader Bucha district accounted for 1,190 fatalities. Hostomel endured 38 days under Russian control, leaving its civilian population devastated. The fighting damaged over 4,500 residential buildings and destroyed or impaired more than 20,000 civilian infrastructure objects. According to the prosecutor's office, over 21,000 criminal offenses were registered in Kyiv Oblast, and 15 mass burial sites were identified.

Investigations into Russia's crimes of aggression are ongoing. Prosecutors have documented more than 240,000 such offenses.

“The spectrum of crimes in Kyiv Oblast was just the beginning, revealing the true face of the Russian Federation,” stated Vladlena Padun.
In June 2025, an agreement was reached to establish a special tribunal to prosecute crimes of Russian aggression.

“We are prosecuting based on irrefutable evidence of crimes against civilians,” reported Oleksandr Zyuz, emphasizing the critical importance of evidence collection. “We already have more than 240 convictions of Russian military personnel,” added Yuriy Belous. These statements underscore the gravity of the situation and the urgent need for continued efforts to achieve justice.

Eyewitnesses have also shared harrowing accounts. Dmytro Pereshivany recalled: 'We advanced toward the airfield on foot, expecting the enemy to engage us in battle at any moment.' Volodymyr Zakhlyupany, reflecting on the horrors endured by residents, said: 'This is the house where my son lived. ... People were in the basement. They stayed there the whole time.' Their testimonies highlight not only individual tragedies but also the deep psychological scars left on the communities of these towns.

The liberation of Irpin, Hostomel, and Bucha opened a new chapter in Ukraine's history, but it also laid bare the devastating consequences of war, demanding attention and decisive action from the international community. The gathered testimonies and documented evidence of war crimes could serve as a foundation for legal prosecution of those responsible, reinforcing the need for global cooperation to deliver justice for the victims of the conflict.
