EU allocates 2 billion euros to Ukraine for drones: how it will strengthen defense

According to inkorr.com: Ukraine receives 2 billion euros from the European Union for the development of drone technologies, which is an important step towards strengthening its defense capabilities amid the war. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced this during a press conference with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, as noted by 'European Truth'.

Use of EU funds for drones

The received funds will be directed towards the production and improvement of unmanned aerial vehicles. According to von der Leyen, this will allow Ukraine to fully realize its technological potential and benefit the European defense industry. She emphasized:

'We have agreed with Ukraine that a total of 2 billion euros will be spent on unmanned aerial vehicles. This enables Ukraine to scale up and fully utilize its potential.'

Main objectives of the initiative

This initiative has several important objectives:

  • Strengthening Ukraine's military capabilities through modern technologies.

  • Developing the European defense industry based on cooperation with Ukraine.

  • Enhancing security on the eastern flank of the EU.

Moreover, the allocation of these funds is part of a broader strategy to support Ukraine. In early September 2025, Ursula von der Leyen announced the provision of a 6 billion euro advance loan, to be funded by revenues from frozen Russian assets. This money will also be used to support drone production.

Recently, European Commissioner for Defense Andrius Kubilius called for an urgent construction of a 'drone wall' on the eastern border of the EU in response to airspace violations by Russian drones in Poland.

This support from the European Union underscores the importance of partnership with Ukraine in the context of modern threats. Now, more than ever, it is crucial to ensure the security of the region and enhance defense capabilities, particularly through new technologies. The production of drones could become a key element in the defense and security strategy, benefiting not only Ukraine but also all of Europe.
