Preparing for an Escalation in Combat

According to TSN.ua: Yuriy Fedorenko, commander of the 429th Separate Brigade of Unmanned Systems "Achilles," has stated that Russia is preparing to escalate hostilities in the spring of 2026. He warned that 2026 could see the most difficult battles of the full-scale war to date, particularly concerning the capture of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, with the primary objective being the seizure of Donetsk Oblast. This forecast underscores the critical phase the war may enter, as both sides prepare for a potential large-scale Russian push.

Fedorenko noted that the situation in this sector remains extremely tense. Russian propaganda has already reported the "complete capture" of Luhansk Oblast on four separate occasions, yet the reality on the ground indicates otherwise. Russian forces are also seeking to push the front line in Zaporizhzhia Oblast. However, in January, the pace of advance for Russian occupation troops along the front decreased by almost half.

Future Conflicts and Their Impact

In anticipation of potential flare-ups, Fedorenko emphasized that the first half of 2027 will be a period when the most active phase of combat begins to subside. This suggests that current and upcoming conflicts could be decisive for the future development of the situation in regions like Donetsk, Luhansk, and Zaporizhzhia Oblasts.

"Preparations for potential battles in the spring of 2026 confirm the seriousness of Russia's intentions regarding the further seizure of Ukrainian territories."

Yuriy Fedorenko

The commander's statements highlight the alarming dynamics of the conflict in Ukraine, demonstrating the continuation of aggressive intentions by the Russian Federation. Despite the reduced pace of Russian advances on the front, the readiness of Ukrainian forces for possible escalations remains crucial, as these could be decisive for future control over strategic regions. Fedorenko's note about the active combat phase subsiding in 2027 may indicate the need for both military and diplomatic preparations for a new stage of the conflict.
