Ukraine Targets Russian Telecoms in Occupied Territories with New Sanctions.
Sanctions Imposed on Russian Mobile and Internet Providers
According to Novyny.live: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has sanctioned ten Russian mobile operators and internet service providers operating illegally in Ukraine’s temporarily occupied regions. The measure was enacted on June 13, 2023, when he signed Decree No. 494/2026. This move targets companies that continue to function under Russian control in areas seized since the invasion began.
The sanctioned companies include:
- Luhansk Communications
- Mobile Communication Systems
- Amtel-Svyaz
- Space Communications
Oversight of the implementation has been assigned to the Secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council.
International Context for the Sanctions
This action is part of Ukraine’s broader strategy to condemn Russian aggression and bolster national security. Around the same time, the European Commission unveiled its 21st sanctions package against Russia, reflecting sustained international pressure on the aggressor nation.
By penalizing these telecom providers, Ukraine reinforces its efforts to strengthen security and combat illegal activities in occupied territories. The decision also highlights close coordination with global allies who continue to impose sanctions on Russia, potentially affecting its economy and war capabilities. Such moves send a strong signal to other nations about the importance of collective action in response to aggression.
