Ukraine’s Mobilization Challenges

According to Novyny.live: According to Ukraine’s military ombudsman, Olha Reshetylova, seven percent of those called up for service had a legal right to a deferment, yet this was overlooked during the mobilization process. She outlined specific circumstances that qualify individuals for exemption, such as being a parent of three or more children, serving as a caregiver for relatives, or being the immediate family member of a soldier who died, went missing, or was taken captive.

Cases where deferment documents were ignored have become a pressing issue that demands immediate action. Reshetylova noted that this oversight leads to a significant waste of resources, as mobilization efforts are not being carried out effectively.

“This is a massive amount of resources we are wasting simply because of poor-quality mobilization,” Olha Reshetylova emphasized.

The Urgent Need for Reform

Additionally, four deaths of conscripts have been recorded inside Territorial Center for Recruitment and Social Support (TCC) facilities. These incidents have sparked public concern and require attention from the relevant authorities. Reshetylova further stated that Ukraine needs motivated soldiers and a complete overhaul of the military medical commission (MMC) system, as such reforms could significantly improve both the mobilization process and the protection of conscripts’ rights.

The problems highlighted by the military ombudsman point to a clear need for sweeping changes in Ukraine’s mobilization system. Drafting individuals who are legally entitled to exemptions risks harming public trust and troop morale. Given the current situation in the country, it is critical to take steps that safeguard the rights of those conscripted and enhance their service conditions—this will help prevent further tragedies and conserve state resources.
