Safe Swimming Across Europe: 96% of Beaches Meet Quality Standards, with Top Clean-Water Countries Revealed.
Water Quality in EU Bathing Areas
According to Tourism.d.ua — Туризм: The European Environment Agency (EEA) has released its annual report on water quality across bathing sites in the European Union. According to the findings, 96% of all monitored swimming spots meet minimum safety requirements. Furthermore, 85% of more than 22,000 locations across the EU earned an 'excellent' rating, reflecting overall high water quality in the region. This report is especially relevant for travelers and locals planning summer trips, as it helps identify the safest places to swim.
Countries with the Highest Water Quality Ratings
Cyprus leads the rankings with 100% of its bathing areas rated as excellent. Greece follows closely with 97.1%, Bulgaria with 96.9%, and Austria with 96.5%. Other countries achieving top marks include:
- Luxembourg
- Denmark
- Germany
- Italy
- Malta
- Lithuania
- Spain
- Croatia
In contrast, several nations reported significantly lower performance. Albania recorded only 16.8% of its bathing waters as excellent. Estonia reached 56.9%, Poland 58.7%, Hungary 64%, and Belgium 67.9%. Poor water quality in these areas is often linked to contamination from E. coli bacteria and intestinal enterococci, which enter water bodies through overloaded sewage systems.
Overall, the report points to positive trends in EU bathing water quality, though certain countries still face challenges. Improving conditions in lower-ranked nations will likely require substantial investment in infrastructure and environmental policies. For tourists and residents alike, these findings are crucial since water quality directly affects health and safety during swimming.
