Consecration of a Memorial Marker and Opening of the Far Caves

According to Tourism.d.ua — Туризм: On July 14, 2026, the grounds of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra hosted the consecration of a memorial marker dedicated to Hetman Ivan Mazepa, alongside the grand opening of the Far Caves. This event marked a significant milestone in the restoration and promotion of Ukraine's historical and cultural heritage. The Far Caves, whose history dates back to 1074, will operate in a test mode until mid-September 2026. This site is part of a UNESCO World Heritage complex that has faced challenges in recent years due to conflict and neglect.

It is worth noting that the Near Caves had already been opened earlier, in February 2026. From August 14 to 15, 2026, access to the Far Caves will be limited exclusively to pilgrims. The total length of the underground corridors in the Far Caves measures 293 meters. This opening aims not only to preserve historical memory but also to restore spiritual life within the Lavra, where the relics of 49 canonized saints are enshrined.

Restoration of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra

The Kyiv Pechersk Lavra sustained significant damage from a Russian shelling attack on the night of June 15, 2026, yet it partially resumed operations by June 19. Metropolitan Epiphanius commented:

“This demonstrates that the aggressor country has been destroying our national memory for centuries.”

Additionally, in early July 2026, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine approved a resolution to establish the Ukrainian National Pantheon within the Lavra's territory. This underscores the growing importance of the Lavra as a center of national identity. Metropolitan Epiphanius further emphasized that “gradually, our Lavra is being restored, strengthened, and Ukrainianized.” Groups of up to 12 people will be allowed into the underground complex either by prior reservation or on a walk-in basis, ensuring comfortable and safe visits to this historic site.
