Risk of prolonged blackouts in freezing weather
Risk of prolonged blackouts in freezing weather

According to ТСН: If the temperature drops to -10°C or lower during the week, a critical situation may arise in the energy system. Electricity consumption may significantly exceed the capabilities of import and domestic generation.

This was reported by the head of the Ukrainian Renewable Energy Association, an energy expert, noting that:

«At temperatures of -10°C and below, electricity consumption increases by 20% due to electric heating and room warming. This will lead to overloads at substations that are undergoing emergency repairs».

Where the Situation May Be Worst

According to the expert, the greatest risks are expected in the Chernihiv and Sumy regions. Serious problems with electricity supply are also predicted for Kherson and Kyiv.

Hryhoriyov clarified that regions with their own generation have lower risks of outages. He added that:

«Electricity supply in critical regions may be reduced to 2-4 hours per day».

The expert emphasized that although the probability of a complete blackout remains low, the severity of disconnection schedules will increase. Even if one region has sufficient generation, it is not always possible to deliver it to others due to damaged infrastructure:

«Even with sufficient generation for one area, it is impossible to transfer it to other regions due to destroyed infrastructure».

The expert also stressed the importance of taking measures to:

«Avoid damage to household appliances during power outages, it is advisable to unplug powerful devices and plug them in gradually after the power is restored».

This helps avoid voltage spikes and additional emergencies.

In case the cold persists, Ukrainians should be prepared for possible power supply interruptions. Citizens are advised to follow expert recommendations to reduce the risks of damage to household appliances and ensure their comfortable stay during the cold weather. The situation may remain complicated, so it is important to keep track of updates from energy companies and government authorities.
