New Year with Whiskey: Tasting Rules and Best Cocktails

According to ТСН: Whiskey is one of the most popular alcoholic beverages in the Western world. Its rich taste and variety of aromas have gained popularity in many countries, becoming the basis for numerous national variations. This drink can be an excellent choice for the New Year's Eve.

How to Properly Drink Whiskey

Whiskey is a strong drink with an alcohol content of 40% to 60%. To make the taste softer, it is better to consume it slightly chilled, at a temperature of 18-20 degrees Celsius. It is not recommended to drink whiskey with ice cubes, as this can lead to a rapid change in the drink's temperature: it cools down and then warms up again from the heat of the hands.

Typically, whiskey is drunk from tumblers with a wide thick bottom. Some prefer brandy glasses known as 'snifters' or tulip glasses that emphasize delicate aromas. Glasses are filled to a maximum of one-third, and one serving consists of about 50 grams.

The Irish and Scots, considering themselves whiskey specialists, have developed an entire tasting system known as the five S rule:

  • sight - to admire

  • smell - to sniff

  • swish - to savor

  • swallow - to gulp

  • splash - to dilute

Cocktails with Whiskey

Whiskey and Cola

This mixture boosts the mood and enhances appetite: the caffeine in cola invigorates, while whiskey relieves tension.

There are no strict recipes here: everyone chooses flavors at their discretion, but traditionally mix equal amounts of ingredients with a few ice cubes and mint leaves.

Irish Coffee

This drink is perfect for winter evenings and has a wonderful taste.

To prepare it, you need: 30 grams of ground coffee, 100 ml of water, 10 ml of sugar syrup, 50 ml of heavy cream, and 50 ml of whiskey. First, brew the coffee, then add the syrup and whiskey, and top with whipped cream.

'Manhattan'

This cocktail stands out with its bright and rich taste.

Recipe: 60 ml of whiskey or bourbon, 30 ml of vermouth, and a few drops of 'Angostura' bitters. Mix all ingredients well and can add a few ice cubes to the glass.

'Whiskey Sour'

This cocktail is also known as 'sour' since it combines whiskey and citrus.

To prepare: 50 ml of bourbon, 25 ml of lemon juice, 20 ml of sugar syrup, and egg white. Mix everything in a shaker with ice before serving in a glass.

What to Drink Whiskey With

Whiskey came to us from Scotland. It is best served with meat or seafood as a side dish. Fruits are not the best option, as their appetizer is unlikely to help avoid hangover.

It pairs well with cheese, especially varieties like Gouda, Parmesan, or Cheddar that enhance the aroma of whiskey without overpowering it.

Traditional snacks are quite acceptable: sandwiches, nuts, chocolate candies. Whiskey prefers semi-darkness and solitude, and the ideal accompaniment for the evening is a book or calm music. This makes it a great addition to the New Year's feast, as it sets a cheerful mood.

In light of traditional celebrations, it is important to approach alcohol consumption responsibly. Whiskey, like any other strong drink, should be consumed in moderation. This drink not only complements the atmosphere but also harmoniously fits into festive moments, giving them a special charm.
