Prosthetics Expert Highlights Greater Complexity of Amputation Cases in Ukraine.
Expert Raises Concerns Over Amputation Care
According to Novyny.live: American prosthetics expert Farhad Ostowari has expressed concern about the severe challenges facing Ukrainian patients who have undergone amputations. With sixteen years of experience treating limb loss and having observed over a thousand such cases, Ostowari brings a significant depth of knowledge. He has worked in Ukraine for three years, collaborating closely with local doctors and rehabilitation centers.
Rehabilitation Challenges in a War Zone
At a recent masterclass titled 'Specifics of Post-Amputation Rehabilitation,' more than fifty Ukrainian physicians gathered. Ostowari noted that amputation cases in Ukraine tend to be more complex, underscoring the critical need for specialized training for medical staff. He also pointed to a shortage of resources for wounded soldiers, which complicates the rehabilitation and prosthetic fitting process. The ongoing conflict has led to a surge in severe injuries, creating an urgent need for advanced prosthetic and rehabilitative care.
The MCOP Ukraine Prosthetics Center, where Ostowari serves as clinical director, operates in partnership with the international charity Future for Ukraine. Furthermore, the center receives support from the government of Iceland, helping to improve conditions for patients. Farhad Ostowari emphasizes that achieving independence is paramount for these individuals.
"Seeing a patient stand up and walk gives me a profound sense of satisfaction," he says.
Enhancing the training of Ukrainian physical therapists and improving rehabilitation infrastructure are key areas requiring attention within the country's current medical landscape. This report highlights the pressing issue of rehabilitating amputee patients in Ukraine, particularly within the context of an armed conflict that continues to increase such casualties. Collaboration with international organizations and the involvement of experienced specialists like Farhad Ostowari are vital steps toward improving treatment and rehabilitation, which can positively impact patients' return to an active life.
