The 47-year-old Freddie, a father of four, was rushed to the hospital after overturning his open Morgan Super 3 car, resulting in severe facial injuries.

He is now undergoing rehabilitation, as the injuries required reconstructive surgery.

Critical moments during the accident

In his column for The Times, he detailed the 'instant decision-making' he became accustomed to during his cricket career, which proved crucial at the moment of the accident.

'Suddenly the car flipped over and the world began to move slowly in chaos,' he wrote.

Freddie realized that something serious awaited him. He faced a choice: reach out his hand and 'lose it', or not brace himself and risk breaking his neck.

'I closed my eyes and raised my left hand, thinking that as a right-handed person, I was ready to lose my left,' he added.

He shared how the car 'dragged him' almost 50 meters 'with his face on the ground, his body tumbling', but fortunately, he survived.

'At that moment, my mind, trained for the demands of cricket, made the right decision. An instant decision that saved my life and changed it.'

In April of this year, Freddie admitted that he felt the BBC treated him 'like a piece of meat.'

'It's the kind of danger that a television program gets into, and I learned that from my own experience,' he said in the Flintoff documentary on Disney+.

Unexpected situations

Freddie also pointed out that the producers of the show kept raising the stakes with stunts, seeking to evoke greater emotions from the viewers.

In March 2023, The Sun reported that the open sports car Morgan Super 3 that Freddie was driving did not have airbags.

In the same month, the BBC announced the cancellation of the 34th season of Top Gear, deeming it inappropriate to continue filming during his rehabilitation.

After the accident, Freddie had to suspend all his affairs, focusing on the rehabilitation process.

He also added that the incident led to his social isolation, as he struggles with mental health issues.

'I really shouldn't be here after what happened. It will be a long road back, and I'm just starting,' he concluded, emphasizing the joy of a second chance.
