Japan changes Prime Minister: what is known about him.
The new leader of Japan's Liberal Democratic Party is former Defense Minister Shigeru Ishiba. After two rounds of voting, he received 215 votes, defeating Minister of Economic Security Sanae Takaichi, who received 194 votes. Other candidates, including two women, also participated in the elections.
Since the Liberal Democratic Party controls the parliament, Ishiba will become Japan's new Prime Minister next week. This change is important for restoring public trust after the scandal involving financial misconduct by party officials.
After losing public trust and the emergence of a financial misconduct scandal, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida decided not to run for re-election as LDP chairman. His cabinet will be dissolved on October 1, and the new party leader and Prime Minister will form a new cabinet. Although the current composition of the parliament has the right to continue its powers until October 2025, it is expected that the new Prime Minister will announce early elections.
Observers predict that Kishida's successor will face several challenges, including rising prices, escalating geopolitical tensions, and the change of the US president next year.
