Over 60 thousand Britons received thousands of pounds in compensation: what is it about.
According to The Sun: Over 60,000 retirees received refunds in the 2023-24 year after their funds were transferred upon pension withdrawal. The average refund amount was £3,342.
According to HMRC, known thanks to a request for information from Royal London, about 11,700 retirees received refunds of £5,000 or more, with 2,400 individuals receiving refunds of over £10,000. Some British savers even received refunds of more than £100,000.
The number of individuals claiming refunds increased by 20% compared to the previous year, and the average refund amount rose by 9% or £280. HMRC often taxes significant withdrawals from pensions as if they were monthly, leading to overpayment.
Since anyone aged 55 or over can access their pension funds, HMRC updated its process for automatically correcting tax codes for those who recently accessed private pensions. This change aims to prevent emergency tax withholdings from pension payments.
How to claim a tax refund
To expedite the refund process, individuals who withdrew a large amount from their pension fund can fill out forms such as P55, P53Z, or P50Z, which are available on the government website. The specific form to use depends on how you accessed your pension funds:
- If you fully withdrew your pension while still working or receiving social benefits, submit form P53Z.
- If you fully withdrew your pension without working or receiving social benefits, use form P50Z.
- If you partially withdrew your pension, fill out form P55.
HMRC aims to process refunds within 30 days and recommends spreading withdrawals over time to avoid future emergency tax withholdings.
During the claims process for refunds in the 2023-24 financial year, over 60,000 retirees in the UK received refunds averaging around £3,342 after their funds were transferred upon accessing pension funds. Among them were those who received even larger amounts, but the highest refund exceeded £100,000. Incorrect taxation of significant withdrawals from pensions was the cause of overpayment.Read also
