Asda's Major Chain Closes Store in London: What We Know About the Reasons.
According to The Sun: The large British supermarket Asda is closing one of its stores within just a few hours.
This unfortunate move could lead to the loss of 50 jobs.
The store in Anchor Retail Park, Stepney Green will close todayThe Asda branch in Anchor Retail Park, Stepney Green is closing its doors for good today, Sunday, September 7, after nearly ten years of operation.
Job Losses
The GMB trade union criticized this decision, noting that it could deprive dozens of employees of their livelihood.
Kit Dixon, the regional representative of GMB, said: “This is terrible news for store staff, many of whom have worked at Asda for many years.”
“We have many GMB members in this store, and they are understandably concerned about their jobs. We hope that most will be able to move to nearby stores, but if this is not possible, there may be losses.”
The union is currently negotiating with Asda, trying to secure new positions for employees at other branches. However, those who are unable to agree to a transfer may find themselves out of work.
Rent Increases
Asda confirmed that the closure of the store in Stepney Green was due to a significant increase in rent demanded by the landlord.
The chain stated that the new rental terms make the further operation of the store “financially unviable.”
A representative of Asda noted: “We are currently consulting with colleagues regarding the proposed closure of our supermarket in Stepney Green.”
“The lease on the premises expires in September, and unfortunately, the new terms offered by the landlord include a significant rent increase, making the store financially unviable.”
Blow to the Community
The store in Stepney Green has been an important part of local residents' lives since it opened nearly 10 years ago.
One shopper wrote on Facebook: “This is such a shame - it is the closest store to my home.”
Others described the closure as “unfortunate,” as families prepare to say a final goodbye to the store this weekend.
Local residents have only a few hours left to shop in Stepney Green before the final closure of Asda on Sunday.
Struggles in Retail
The closure of Asda comes amid growing costs, a decline in consumer spending, and sharp increases in rent faced by supermarkets and retailers.
Co-op recently announced that 34 of its outlets are at risk, while Morrisons closed 16 stores in April.
The famous brand River Island has also warned of potential closures of up to 33 stores as part of a major restructuring, while Poundland has reported the closure of 68 branches.
Last month, the accessories chain Claire’s announced bankruptcy, although all 306 of its stores in the UK and Ireland remain open for now.
Asda's Tough Situation
The closure takes place amid concerns for Asda, which has over 1,200 stores in the UK.
The chain is undergoing a £1 billion IT modernization process, which has already caused delivery and stock issues.
CEO Allan Leighton acknowledged that the reforms have resulted in 'temporary disruptions' in stores and online orders, and these issues are likely to persist until the end of September.
In the meantime, the supermarket is actively investing in refurbishments, individual convenience stores, and its own clothing line, George.
Asda has faced financial difficulties since its acquisition for £6.8 billion by the Blackburn brothers Mohsin and Zuber Issa along with private equity firm TDR Capital.
Last year, TDR Capital acquired Zuber Issa's stake, leaving his brother Mohsin as the sole family owner.
The closure of the store in Stepney Green is another sign of the difficulties faced by retail, as consumer demand continues to decline while costs rise. Political and economic factors further complicate the situation for many supermarkets, and Asda is no exception. Current events may point to new challenges ahead for the entire industry.
