How Attacks on Russian Refineries Are Crippling the Oil Sector

According to Espreso.tv: Strikes targeting Russia’s oil refineries have inflicted heavy damage on the country’s petroleum industry and triggered a severe fuel shortage. Over the past month, eight refineries came under attack, disabling 42.74% of total projected refining capacity. Since August 2025, cumulative losses have been estimated at $13.5 billion.

More than 60 storage tanks have been destroyed or critically damaged in these assaults. Of these:

  • 58% held refined petroleum products,
  • 42% contained crude oil.

Throughout June, there were almost no days without reports of repercussions from the aggression in some Russian city. This led gas stations to impose strict fuel limits for ordinary drivers, adding to the public’s hardship.

Energy Sector in Turmoil

As a result, Russian companies have nearly halted seaborne diesel exports—a clear sign of a deep energy crisis. With capacity slashed and fuel access restricted, the oil industry’s situation remains critical.

These events highlight how vulnerable Russia’s oil infrastructure has become amid mounting threats.

This loss of capacity may have lasting consequences not only for the domestic market but also for global oil prices, given Russia’s role as a major supplier. Facing these challenges, the country could encounter fresh economic difficulties in its energy sector, which in turn would undermine the overall stability of its economy.
