The History of the Estate
In 1982, Hearn purchased the vast Maskells estate in Essex for £200,000, using proceeds from the sale of pool halls. This place once belonged to the president of Ford Motor Company in Europe and then became home to the Hearn family, including Barry's father and son Eddie.
Currently, while no one lives on the premises, Maskells remains the headquarters of Matchroom, where business is actively conducted. This majestic white building near Brentwood serves as a location for securing deals for major fights and tournaments across various sports.
Athlete Facilities
Barry Hearn, 77, created perfect conditions for many athletes. This unique place allows them to prepare for important events, as highlighted in the new Netflix show 'Matchroom: The Greatest Showmen'. Athletes can train, rest, hold media days and even dine here.
Maskells is located not far from the M25 ring road and is renowned for its stunning views of the London skyline. One of the most famous features is the luxurious swimming pool, perfect for morning swims, recovery after workouts, or for fighters recuperating from injuries.
Hearn Jr., 46, told the Daily Mail: “The key to a healthy mind is a healthy body. We have a pool and a gym on the top floor where fighters can hold meetings, have sessions with trainers, and do strength training in the pool.”
“This pool has been used by many great fighters over the years – Chris Eubank, Jim McDonnell and Darren Barker.”
Boxers like Anthony Joshua are not limited to training only in the pool; many of them also actively use running spaces and large lawns for trainer-led sessions in the summer months.

In 2020, the Hearns organized “Fight Camp” in their garden to continue hosting boxing nights during the pandemic.

Despite Barry officially stepping down as director of the company in 2021 and slightly reducing his involvement in daily affairs, he remains president of the company he founded in 1982. Eddie, the company chair, noted that his father still has a larger and better office.
Joshua confessed that he wants to buy Maskells, saying: “Matchroom is a family business... I want to buy that house, Matchroom’s office is in it, it’s one of my goals.”
TalkSPORT
The Maskells estate not only reflects Barry Hearn's career but has also become an iconic place for boxing. It hosts training sessions, competitions, and deals that change the sports world. The versatility of this place underscores the importance of the Hearn family in the evolution of boxing and sports business overall. Modern training and infrastructure provide athletes with unique opportunities for success.
