Brussels Hosts Ukraine Defense Contact Group Session
According to UATV: On June 18, 2023, the Ukraine Defense Contact Group convened in Brussels under the Ramstein format. The agenda focused on fresh assistance packages for Ukraine. A key announcement came during the session: Belgium will supply seven F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, visiting Brussels for the event, held talks with Belgium’s prime minister and addressed the group directly.
Global Solidarity in Action
Roughly ten nations voiced support for new PURL aid packages during the meeting. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte reported that Russia’s monthly losses in Ukraine are between 30,000 and 35,000 personnel. Germany also revealed a major aid package that includes missiles. Additionally, Ukraine and Germany signed a defense agreement focused on integrating defense technologies.
In his speech, President Zelensky stressed the role of diplomacy in resolving the conflict, stating:
“We have the tools, and we are strong enough to put Russia on a path where diplomacy becomes the only choice.” - Volodymyr Zelensky
This remark underscores Ukraine’s commitment to a peaceful resolution of the situation.
Notably, the previous week saw the opening of the first negotiation cluster for Ukraine’s European Union accession in Luxembourg, highlighting the country’s active push toward European integration. To close the meeting, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced a $200 million contribution to support Ukraine, further demonstrating international solidarity with the nation.
Overall, the Contact Group’s gathering in Brussels marked a pivotal moment in shaping new strategies to back Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict with Russia.
