Belgium's readiness to support Ukraine

Belgian Minister of Defense Theo Francken stated that the country is considering the possibility of sending its military to Ukraine if peace can be established. He shared this information on August 29 before a meeting of EU defense ministers in Copenhagen.

Financial support and military equipment

'We plan to support Ukraine with an additional 100 million [euros] under the [program] PURL (Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List). This is the decision of the Belgian government made this week. Otherwise, we will continue to support Ukraine with all available forces,' he stated.

Francken also noted that the delivery of F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine will happen as soon as possible.

'I think we are set for further participation in the 'coalition of the willing.' The Belgian government fully reaffirms its position on Ukraine and the war in Ukraine. We can help in many areas, and we will help in many areas: navy, air force. We will assist within the framework of the 'coalition of the willing.' And we will help Ukraine once a truce is reached. I hope the truce comes as soon as possible, but personally, I am skeptical. We will see what happens with troop deployment, but for Belgium, anything is possible,' he concluded.

Talks about peace

As noted by Alexander Leonov, the Executive Director of the Applied Political Research Center 'Penta', it is important that negotiations for a peace agreement and security guarantees proceed in parallel. This is especially relevant since Russia, while being the aggressor, cannot be a participant in ensuring security.

Belgium continues to actively support Ukraine, both economically and militarily. The declared readiness for a possible troop deployment underscores the country's desire to take an active stance in supporting stability in the region. Negotiations for peace are an important step towards achieving a long-term resolution to the conflict; however, coordinated work among all participants in the process is needed to bring about real change.
