Batman in the subway increased the kindness of passengers: results of the experiment.
According to ТСН: Italian psychologists conducted an experiment that showed that the appearance of Batman in public transport can promote kinder behavior among people. The study, presented in Mental Health Research, examined how unexpected events, particularly the presence of a person in a superhero costume, influence the behavior of passengers.
Experiment in the subway
Psychologists from the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Milan conducted an experiment in the subway to find out who among the passengers would give up their seat for a pregnant woman. Under normal conditions, only 37.66% of passengers offered her a seat.
However, when a person in a Batman costume entered the subway car, 67.21% of passengers started to offer their seat to the woman. Interestingly, 44% of those who offered a seat admitted that they did not even notice Batman.
Conclusions of the study
The researchers noted that these results support the idea that unexpected events can encourage kinder behavior.
“For example, if you're listening to a podcast with headphones in the morning subway, you are unlikely to pay attention to others. But Batman will definitely grab your attention, and you will suddenly notice the pregnant passenger who needs a seat,”explain the researchers.
These findings open up new possibilities for thinking about how public spaces and social initiatives can promote kindness and collaboration. If unexpected but safe events can increase awareness and good behavior, it is worth considering how to integrate such 'positive shifts' into everyday life.
This can relate to both artistic and theatrical interventions in public spaces, as well as strategic campaigns aimed at temporarily disrupting the routine and engaging people with their surroundings and community.
