Merz on Ceasefire Conditions: Security Guarantees from the USA and Europe.
According to ТСН: German Chancellor Friedrich Merz believes that a ceasefire in Ukraine is only possible if guarantees of security from the USA and Europe are received.
In a letter to members of the CDU/CSU and SPD factions in the Bundestag, which was published by Politico, he stated:
“Russia should not doubt our determination. We all want to end the war and the terrible bloodshed as soon as possible.”
Merz emphasized that diplomatic efforts to end the war are taking place under very difficult conditions. Russia shows limited willingness to negotiate, while President Zelensky works on unity within Ukrainian society. In particular, transatlantic cooperation has undergone significant changes due to the new US policy.
He also noted:
“In this situation, we are adhering to a clear course: we want a ceasefire that preserves Ukraine's sovereignty.”
According to him, such a ceasefire, unlike the Minsk agreements, must be secured by guarantees of security from the USA and Europe.
Merz concluded:
“And we, as Europeans, want to help shape this peace. We will only succeed in a strong and united Europe, for which we are striving with all our might.”
Earlier, the German Chancellor pointed out that Ukraine has found itself “on the brink of a humanitarian energy crisis.”
Merz's statements emphasize the necessity of international support to achieve stability in Ukraine. The security guarantees being discussed will become an important step in ensuring lasting peace and rebuilding the country after the conflict. Negotiations remain complex, and diplomatic efforts require active engagement from all participants in the process.
