A $25 Million Russian Tor Missile System Destroyed by Ukraine’s National Guard – Here’s How They Did It.
Ukrainian Forces Knock Out a Russian Tor Air Defense System
According to UATV: On July 17, 2023, operators from the 4th Detachment of the Omega Special Purpose Center, part of Ukraine’s National Guard, successfully destroyed a Russian Tor surface-to-air missile system in the Luhansk sector. The system is valued at around $25 million. To take it out, they deployed a Hornet kamikaze drone.
Ukraine’s Ministry of Internal Affairs commented on the operation, stating:
“That’s $25 million less for the enemy. The Russian Tor air defense system, meant to protect occupiers in the Luhansk region, couldn’t even save itself.” – Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine
Officials highlighted the precision of the Omega unit, which neutralized the system with a single drone strike. The Ministry also underscored the cost-effectiveness of the tactic, noting that the drone used to hit the target is nearly 5,000 times cheaper than the Tor system itself.
Broader Campaign Against Russian Naval Assets
This mission was part of a larger effort that saw 147 Russian vessels struck between July 6 and July 16.
The destruction of the Tor missile system reflects Ukraine’s growing proficiency with unmanned technologies in military operations. The Omega unit’s success not only inflicted a significant financial blow on the adversary but also strengthened Ukrainian positions in the Luhansk area. Furthermore, it demonstrates how Ukrainian forces are rapidly adapting to new technologies, which could shape future tactical decisions in the conflict.
