Zelenskyy Reports Destruction of Tu-95 Bomber and Strikes on Russian Oil Assets: Key Takeaways.
Strike Deep Inside Russian Territory
According to UATV: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on July 17, 2023, the outcome of fresh long-range attacks on Russian soil. These operations resulted in the destruction of a Tu-95 strategic bomber, a type of aircraft used by Moscow to launch missile strikes against Ukraine. At the time of the attack, the target was roughly 800 kilometers from Ukraine's state border.
In addition to the bomber, Ukraine’s defense forces targeted Russian oil infrastructure. As part of these actions, they struck 20 tankers in the Black Sea. The military also confirmed the elimination of a hostile Mi-28 "Night Hunter" helicopter.
President Zelenskyy’s Remarks
“The SBU [Security Service of Ukraine] destroyed a military Tu-95 aircraft in Engels, which was used for Russian missile strikes against our country. The distance from our state border is about 800 kilometers.”
Zelenskyy further stated:
“We are increasing the cost for Russia for its aggression against our state and our people,”underscoring Ukraine’s determination to raise the price the aggressor pays for its war.
These strikes highlight a shift in Ukrainian military tactics, demonstrating a newfound ability to hit targets at great distances—boosting their effectiveness in countering Russian aggression. At the same time, attacks on strategic assets like military aircraft and oil tankers can significantly disrupt Russia’s logistics and resource supply, particularly fuel for combat operations. The Ukrainian president’s statements reaffirm the country’s resolve to continue defensive operations and retaliate against the enemy’s aggression.
