The match in the Isthmian Premier League was stopped just 15 minutes after kickoff due to Vigar's injury. He was provided with assistance, and then a helicopter transported him to the hospital.

The game was canceled after the club confirmed that Vigar had suffered a serious head injury and had been placed into a coma.

The sad news of his death was announced by Chichester football club on Thursday evening, along with a statement from the family.

“After sustaining a significant head injury last Saturday, Billy Vigar was placed in an induced coma. On Tuesday, he required surgery to improve his chances of recovery. While this helped, the injury proved too severe, and he passed away on Thursday morning (25th).”

Billy's family expressed their grief: “The responses to the initial update showed how much Billy was loved and respected in the sport. His family is shocked that this occurred during a game of the sport he loved so much.”

They also noted that “it is still too early to talk about the outcome; even if all goes well, the road to recovery will be long.”

Career

Vigar was from Worthing, West Sussex. He began his youth career at Arsenal at the age of 14 and signed a professional contract in July 2022.

After that, he rose to the U21 team in North London and also had loan spells at Derby County U21 and Eastbourne.

“Really excited to sign my first professional contract @arsenal. Proud moment for myself and my family. The work continues.”

Vigar left the club in 2024 after failing to make the first team and joined Hastings United in the Non-League Premier League, before later moving to Chichester.
