Military Cooperation Between Ukraine and Bulgaria

According to UATV: Ukraine will no longer receive free military aid from Bulgaria; the defense cooperation between the two countries will now be on a commercial basis. This was announced by the spokesman of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, Heorhij Tychyj, on June 10. He emphasized that this type of relationship is beneficial for both sides and stressed:

"Cooperation will continue and strengthen both countries."
Since 2022, Bulgaria has delivered a total of 13 military aid packages to Ukraine. However, details regarding the scope and costs of these packages remain secret, raising questions about the transparency of the support.

Political Developments in Bulgaria

At the same time as these changes, the party "Progressive Bulgaria" led by Rumen Radev won the parliamentary elections on April 19. This indicates a possible realignment of Bulgarian politics that could also influence future defense cooperation with Ukraine. The shift to commercial contracts demonstrates how important economic aspects have become in times of scarce resources. Observers should closely monitor Bulgaria's further political steps, as they could lead to strategic decisions regarding military assistance.
